Mike Byrne, the Cement Block
Guy, has been interested in concrete and cement ever since he was a boy
growing up in St. Louis. In his late 20's, he moved to the country and
bought his very first concrete mixer and his fascination has continued to
grow ever since.
By profession, Mike has been an educator and management consultant for over
25 years, but he has always made time along the way for one hobby or another
- all involving concrete.
When he moved to the country in the late 1970's, he built his first house.
He fed his concrete "addiction" by pouring the house foundation. Then he
continued - pouring slabs for outbuildings and walkways.
As time went by, Mike also developed a fascination for casting smaller
concrete pieces from molds. Several years ago, he joined his love of
Japanese gardens with his love of concrete and began casting Japanese
lanterns and other garden sculptures, including garden stepping stones. All
of Mike's castings were done from molds he built himself.
Finding his work with molds very appealing, Mike decided to try his hand at
concrete work on a much smaller scale. He began his foray into the world of
miniatures by carving two cement block replicas from a block of wood. These
first two blocks were the full block and the half block. Using those as
models, Mike poured his first rubber molds. After casting several individual
cement blocks, Mike created rubber molds large enough for him to cast
multiple blocks in each "pour." From there, he expanded his block selection,
using the same process as he had the first time - carve the model from wood,
make the first rubber mold, cast several cement blocks, then make a bigger
mold. From a meager start of just two blocks, Mike now has molds for over 16
varieties of cement block!
Each and every cement block produced by the Cement Block Guy is handcast by
Mike himself. And each one is painstakingly sanded and finished so it will
perform well in any hobby project.
As you will see on the products pages, Mike has a variety of cement creations
available. He has full kits and various sizes of blocks. He also does custom
designs. In addition, Mike has several plans for full-size ride on
wooden toys.
We hope you will enjoy your visit with the Cement Block Guy and we hope you
will return often! |
